ART IN MOTION

Art in Motion – with a title like that, this is one event that we’re keen to get behind!

Coordinated by expert refinisher Chris Pace of Pace’s Paint Shop in Mackay, this very special art show will take place at the prestigious MOVE (Museum of Vehicle Evolution) in Shepparton from September to October 2025.

Born with a passion for expert car building, Chris recognised that many in the auto industry also used their learned skills and talents for artistic expression. He wanted to harness this collective creativity in a truly unique exhibition, assembling the works of more than 35 artists in the showcase, with many works directly connected to cars, motorbikes, or machinery.

“Mechanical tools and parts shaped into something unique; sheet metal structures, a floral arrangement created using leather and suede, digital art, airbrush, pinstripe, freehand paint and drawing, concept and design renderings, machine work and engineering – this is an exhibition that showcases the person’s skill through their work in a way they may never get to do otherwise,” divulged Chris.

“Some attendees will be displaying modern art and impressionist paintings created using techniques they’ve learned as a sign writer or airbrush artist. For example, Darren Wenzel is an incredible Australian airbrush and pinstripe artist who has been living in the US for the past 18 years and has created a collection of contemporary art pieces on canvas. His work is highly regarded the world over.”

A handful of cars and bikes will be included because of their relevance to some of the art pieces and illustrations. A variety of car clubs have also partnered with MOVE to host small car shows on each weekend during the event, including the Cranksters and the GT Falcon Club of Victoria.

“The fact that this is not a competition has generated a very different response. People are excited to be able to display their work as art rather than being judged and categorised by their peers at a car show. There are no trophies at the end of it, so it’s a far more relaxed environment. Personally, I’d like to raise the profile of these incredible tradespeople so that a different demographic might be exposed to the amazing artworks that they create.”

For the viewing public, the exhibition will officially open on Saturday, September 13, with a curator’s talk and a collection of artists in attendance at 11.00 am. It will remain in place until the end of October, although some pieces will remain on display for an extended period.

MOVE Shepparton is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., daily. Visit moveshepparton.com.au for further information.
