The car community was saddened to hear of the passing of Ron Whelan last week. Ron spent his life serving all facets of the automotive scene, as a Summernats official, a drag racer, a car club member and as an all round classic car and drag racing enthusiast.

A founding member and past president of Kustoms of Australia (Gold Coast), tributes flowed in steadily on Facebook following the news.

Extremely sad day today to hear of the passing of Ron Whelan. A true gentleman that was larger than life that held the key to the book of drag racing history in Australia and loved to tell the stories. Ronny you will be forever missed and I can assure you that you will always be part of stories told in the future.

I worked with him as a scrutineer at Surfers Paradise Raceway and the he was part of our valuable Summernats team for years. Man, has he been a great mate.
