The custom car community is in shock this week with the news of the sudden passing of prolific hot rodder and custom car builder, Mario Colalillo. ‘The Bro’ has touched so many people’s hearts and souls with his outgoing nature and beautiful vehicles, most notable WILDCAD. The 1959 Cadillac Coupe De Ville achieved him worldwide notoriety, succeeding in his life goals of building the car and taking it to California to participate in the pinnacle of custom car events. Long time readers will recall our features of WILDCAD in both Cruzin #108 (unfinished form), and then in Cruzin #120 in a special ‘dual cover’ edition. Mario was always a great supporter of Cruzin magazine from its earliest days and met every engagement with a big smile, warm handshake and a kind word. We were proud to have known him and feature many of his special vehicles throughout the years.
“We have been overwhelmed with the amount of love, support and tributes that have been posted over the last few days from near and far and we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. We are still dealing with the shock, sadness and loss of our beloved larger than life legend of a man,” said his son, Andy, in response to the hundreds of tributes that flowed in from around the world.
Along with Mario’s wife Catriona, the pair will host a small private funeral for close friends and family, and then a larger celebration on the second weekend of December, date and location to be confirmed.
“Please join us then with your wildest ride, comforting words, hugs and to share stories and remember a life lived 100 mile an hour,” Andy adds.
We’ll reveal the date and location as soon as it’s announced.
