Of all the amazing vehicles racing at the Cruzin Magazine Nostalgia Drags and Hot Rod Reunion, Darren Bazarnik’s short wheelbase altered is one of the most inspiring.

“It started a few years ago. This is what I wanted to get into, these short wheelbase, little tyred cars. I always loved the Rat Trap, I wanted to get into something like that.”

And he did, taking a diecast model of the Rat Trap Bantam-bodied altered to Grant O-Rourke at 1320 Race Cars and asking him to build a chassis of comparable proportions, while Emery Engineering reproduced the revolutionary (for 1969) front end. A small block Chevy was planned for the 113” wheelbase terror until a blown big block fell into Darren’s lap.

“The body came from Maryland, it’s from the original mould for the Rat Trap body from the ‘60s, including the little grille. The wing is just for looks. It’s a profile that’s somewhere close. The motor sits six inches higher than a standard altered. It’s gotta be high, it’s gotta have that look,” he grins.

Darren built the car to have fun and is doing just that, 6.6 seconds at a time at more than 210mph. He’ll be aiming for similar performances this Sunday at the Cruzin Magazine Nostalgia Drags and Hot Rod Reunion when he takes on five other supercharged contenders in the Top Eliminator bracket.

The Cruzin Magazine Nostalgia Drags and Hot Rod Reunion will be at Willowbank Raceway this Sunday, August 13, 2017.
