Notable hot rod builder Darryl Kuhnemann has passed away after succumbing to ongoing health problems. A long time Toowoomba resident, Darryl retired to the Sunshine Coast in the mid 2000s, setting up a workshop where he could continue to build hot rods for himself and others and launching a popular monthly cruise morning. Long time readers may recall Darryl’s bright yellow, hiboy style 1932 Ford Sedan Delivery which appeared on the cover of Cruzin #35 way back in 2003.
“Darryl had a love for the hot rod sport, having started around 50 years ago, and went on to build many for himself, as well as many part or full builds for many others. He was an icon in the sport..he was well known in the South East Queensland area, as well as nationally, and internationally,” said long time friend Greg Thomsen.
A funeral service will be held this Saturday, 1st July at 12:00, the Gregson & Weight Chapel, 159 Wises Road, Buderim. After the service, all hot rods, classics and street machines are welcome to join in the cruise to his resting place at the Kulangoor Lawn Cemetery, about a 20 minute drive from Buderim.
