The 40th anniversary Valla Park Rod Run has been and gone with another bumper crop of hot rods revealed and a head full of great memories for those that make this event an annual pilgrimage. Lifelong friendships have been forged at this week-long gathering hosted by the Sydney-based Drag-Ens Hot Rod Club. Fine weather permitting, the seven days of festivities include hot rod games, billy cart derby, a fishing competition, raft racing, costume parties, kids activities, bingo, fireworks, multiple cruises and a hot rod show every day. Phew!
The event is not without its formalities, with the ‘Valla 8’ (eight people who have attended every run since its inception) awarded commemorative clocks for this anniversary year. People’s Choice voting carves out the Top Ten for the weekend with additional recognition for Top Rookie, Longest Distance, Top Cruiser, an assortment of driving events, and the Dennis Moreau Memorial Trophy for Best Engineered. That last one was deservedly won by Mike Renfrey and his hand built ‘33 roadster.
Valla 2017 is locked in for Sunday, September 21 through Saturday, September 30, with entry forms released on the Drag-Ens website at midnight, June 9. Tune in to www.drag-ens.com when the time comes.
Alicia O’Bryan is a regular and wouldn’t miss it for the world. She does a beautiful job of capturing the party atmosphere of the event, along with some amazing drone shots of the famous street show. Here’s a snippet!
